Category: Issue 11

Hazel eyes
scan the skyline
remembering a war
domesticated by liquor,
words hurled like dishes,
hands turned steel
liberating blood from
muscled prisons
to leak under alabaster skin,
painting freckles blue, purple, green,
until veins are swathed in stillness.

Silence consumes her,
she’s drowning…

Sirens scream her name,
the voices flooding her brain again…

Don’t have anything to live for…
                    Just a worthless bitch…
                                Can’t even look at you…
                  Not your fault…
    They’ll know it was you…

She runs until her legs beg mercy,
through the colors of the ocean,
to the light
and she breathes.
