A way to encourage new joins to contribute

  • I like the idea of encouraging new members, but I’d rather encourage them to vote than to post.  If others think we should encourage posting more, I’m ok with adding a “Newbie” category, and spreading some of the prize money to it - but how much?  And “Newbie” is a bad name, so we’ll need something better.

I’ve also been thinking about the rewards for voting and posting.  When you post something great, you get the cash, but what I think is even better is the advancement of your entry into the Winner’s Cirlce / Literal Translations, bound to be seen and appreciated by more people and ultimately appear in print.  But doing a lot of good voting might get you a ranking award (as it is now). So shifting prize money from posters to voters seems like a good idea.

I suppose it’s difficult to let the winner’s awards go down, but looking out over the long term, it’s the widespread recognition of quality that will make the publication do really well, not necessarily the quality itself.

But damn, I’m so… hesitant to challenge any of your input because it’s so good! grin

  • While I agree w/ both of you whole heartedly, I think that perhaps some of the participation issues might be addressed simply by scaling back the suggestion box prize in half, & using that $25 as a prize for the top two or three who rank the most entries. You could even make it for the top new (2-4 weeks, thanks to the lovely & erudite Winona who made me laugh the other day)two or three “rankers/voters”.

  • Ok, to make it simple, here’s what I’m thinking:

$25 from the suggestion box is good since that category isn’t going into the publication anyway, and whoever is involved will already have a strong incentive to let me know of any suggestions they think of.

That $25 will be split evenly between all members who signed up after the last contest ended who have ranked one category completely.

I’m about to start working on a page that will be displayed to new members when they activate their account.  It will explain how they can earn a part of the $25 and how they can earn by ranking after their first week, and it will have a link to the tutorial.

...unless you wonderful inspiring people come up with better alternatives grin

  • ....Sounds like a weeener…& if I happen to win suggestion box, make it retroactive to this week…others might not want to, but that’s what I think…

  • ...Hey, you know what’s really cool about this site…There’s even little back room politics hidden in plain sight…Make a little capitalist environment, even in a field of artists, & the process still thrives like a wicked virus…Hell of a sociology axe-spear-mint…

  • LOL

Wicked virus indeed.  Tears of joy, my friend.

There’s a book by Stuart Kauffman called “At Home in the Universe: The Search for Laws of Self-Organization and Complexity”  He starts out explaining that much of physics is dedicated to closed systems, which almost nothing is.  Real systems are constantly bombarded with energy (sunlight, for one thing), and this bombardment produces order (plants, evolution etc.)  I look at thought the same way.  I’m buying thought with my $175/wk, and it is producing order.

But I hate politics.  Can we call it something else?  Or maybe it’s just politicians I hate.  Hmm…

  • Glad you enjoyed it, & perhaps you can take comfort in some chaos theory…$175.00 spent on a butterflies wings in Brazil could cause a million dollar tsunami on planet Dave…Ask Mark Cuban…He seems to be doing well with it…

  • I think the prize money for voting is nice, but I agree that a newcomers field of entry would encourage more participation (both writing and voting).

You do need to grow the writing pool, because I don’t think the active contributors, enthusiastic and talented as they are, have enough of a critical mass to keep readers returning. There are just not enough entries to keep visiting on a daily basis to check on changes… and I don’t think a site that only needs a weekly check in is enough to keep people coming back.
