  • At first, as I was reading this, I thought, “Well, this is only fit for a women’s magazine article in a Woman’s Magazine, and what would it be doing in a literary journal?”

The reason for this was that my first inclination was to reply immediately with my own experiences and arguments with and about many of the same phenomena. As I read on through it, I kept having the same thoughts.

Somewhere towards the end, though, something crossed my mind:  GEE.

It would be cool if this got published.  Because it’s true.  It’s just one shot at describing one life of one woman, but lots of women can identify with it—especially the STANCE one takes against any intruder, including menopause.  I like this piece so much because it makes me want to talk about my own experience.  It makes me want to talk to other women and share that.  I shall forebear to do that here, but that’s what I have to say.

For women, this is a fascinating topic (and it could be for men, too, because it is Scientific).  There’s the element of Personal Experience, which is personal and unique, psychologically and physically for everyone; and there’s the question of whether to weather menopause out “naturually” or to alleviate the symptoms (if that’s what they are) with science’s best attempts to help.

As far as I know there aren’t any “right” answers coming from anywhere at this point, and perhaps there won’t be.  I like this story, in the long run, because it made me happy that there are other women around to compare notes with.  Because Comparing Notes has always been what women do.  I’m glad.  Good story, I guess I meant to say.
