Intro to the Chomsky category

Category: Chomsky

Here’s a brief email conversation I had with the man.  Marc Okon will be interviewing him and asked me for a question he could ask on my behalf.

Well, the evaluation is up to other people that want to send emails.  The software just combines their decisions.

On the other hand, of course they can be evaluated mechanically - isn’t that how your spam filter works?  So I’m not sure if we’re understanding each other.

What I’m trying to do is spread this meme: a judgment that one idea is better than another is better than a judgment that a particular idea is good or bad.

I created a category on my website called ‘Chomsky’. People have to register for free membership to use it.  If you think the idea might have merit, you can let people know about it.  They can write “open letters” to you there, and in the process, they will help organize those open letters according to quality.

      Noam,

Marc Okon asked me for a question he plans to ask you as part of an upcoming interview.  I read somewhere that you get a lot of email.  So, cutting to the chase:

Suppose that you could direct email senders to an “email hopper” in which the senders and some software cooperated to push the most useless emails to the bottom of a list and the best ones to the top?

I imagine that you either have some other people reading email for you, or else you just toss some without responding.  If you are familiar with the Condorcet Election method, also called Vote 1-2-3 (it is not IRV, which is seriously and subtly flawed), then you have an idea how the hopper would work.  If you’d like more details - or the question I sent to Marc, let me know and I’ll send them.
