Red Stains

Category: Poetry/Lyrics

Don’t kick up a stink,
it’s only ink
from a cheap teacher’s pen
that cracked between innocent teeth.

You worry too much,
it’s only wine.
A clumsy, decadent badge
on the bedsheets.

Relax,
it’s only jam.
Sticky-sweet and suspicious
in the corner of a smile.

Lighten up,
it’s only lipstick.
“Scarlet Starlet”, it’s called.
“Scarlet Harlot”, Sally called it, grinning.

I only left the faintest smudge
on the flesh of your neck, where the blood flows
blue as a river,
for aesthetic effect.
