To the One
Category: Issue 9 To the one who got away:
The one who drew symbols on the back of my hand, who said he could see my aura as a shining light around my lemon-juice-highlighted hair, and who shared his mug of Cheerios and milk with me at the party where everyone else was drinking warm beer;
The one who had both ears pierced and wore his hair long years before Middle Earth chic became quite so chic;
The one who wrote all those letters with all those poems that I could hardly bear to read;
The one who danced in and out of my life, who was just what I didn’t need, who was the right man at the wrong time, who married someone else—
To that one, I have this to say: Thank you.
Thank you for always staying magic, for never becoming real, and human, and disappointing.
Thank you for reminding me, again and again, that fundamentally we are all alone, and for letting me find the strength in that.
Thank you for giving me the gift of this lingering sweet pain, which I return to when my soul is hungry, so I can suck on it like a bitter lollipop.
