Hoi all!

Hope summer has treated you well and life is good. To all those parents out there, Happy Back To School Day! Yeeha…

Now onto bidness…

The Barb Terry Book, How Athletes Roll has been released and is for sale. It’s already Comfort Publishing’s best seller ever, and Barb is doing a ton of media, with shows like GMA, Today and Jimmy Kimmel lined up, so I’m very pleased. Can’t wait to do the second book, and as you can see by the videos on the site with Michael Strahan and Too Tall Jones, we’re working on a television show as well. Currently, I have 2 more books in the fire and am already receiving decent responses on another book I wrote called Down For The Count by a few agencies, so wish me luck.

Also, I will have some small overflow work, mainly web copy, if anyone is interested. Just drop me a line.

I hope to hear from some of you folks out there too, as to what you’re up to, what you’ve been doing. If anybody has any releases coming out, let me know about that as well. We’d love to let everyone know where they can see your work or where they can get a copy. I know Summer is busy and filled with vacations and swimming and such things, but I’m sure some of you have been pounding away on the keyboard, and we’d like to see what you’ve been doing.

As for me, I guess it’s back to work yet again.

Ho-Hum....

I guess it beats not having work to do, eh!

Have a great end of summer. Be talking to you soon.

Ahoy,

Whale, it’s been awhile since I spoke to all my beloved litmock writers, readers and voters, but it is time. Indeed, it’s time. First, hope those in America had a Happy Memorial Day! To the rest of you, I hope you had a great weekend wherever you might have been. I have come to find that every day, even the worst ones, are worth celebrating, and I’ve had my share of pure joy and sorrow for the past several months, but enough of all that for now. Onto Litmock news, and big stuff at that. The Barb Terry book I co-authored, How Athletes Roll, is done and is on sale, and she’s already been booked on a ton of radio and television shows to promote it, from local television to GMA, to Today, to Letterman and even The Howard Stern Show.

This is the first of a number of projects I and Dave have worked on to build a profile for Litmock that has come to fruition, and we will all benefit and be involved from this and several other projects coming up that I believe have legs. A lot of what I’ve endured this past year I can’t discuss for reasons that could be problematic before my situation is settled, but rest assured, there are two projects I believe that can be pretty huge if and when they are completed, and two that will be socially relevant. A couple of these I will address in the next few newsletters. But back to How Athletes Roll.

The first book signing featured pro bowl Dallas Cowboy Ed “Too Tall” Jones, 17 time World Heavyweight Pro Wrestling Champ Ric Flair, and former Olympian Gold Medalist Dan Jansen. Here are the details.

The first official television blurb occurred on a regular Houston show that she does, it’s a few minutes long and you can view it here. It’s the beginning to a long list of publicity stops she will make, and in many large cities the 40 pro athletes in the book, from Mike Strahan to Sugar Ray Leonard, have pledged to do book signings and promote the book with her. Distribution is global. Barnes and Noble will be stocking the book any day, and of course it can be ordered on Amazon. Info on the book can be found here, though all media appearances are not up to date.

Also, the Pro Athlete Counsel that Dave and I are charter members of had a successful event in Charlotte last week, its first solo event, with a number of pro athletes, including founder Mike Barber and Barb, who is a new member, so it’s all starting to grow. It’s taken several years to get this far and hopefully, there’s still a long, long way to go, but I’m proud of the effort and the outcome thus far. Wish I could have attended, I really do, but I will have pictures for the next newsletter.

Oh, and Dave wanted you all to know about this contest. Looks good to me. All I know, is that if I didn’t enter a contest to name this site and win some money writing about 6 odd years ago, I wouldn’t be happy to announce the publication of How Athlete’s Roll, I wouldn’t have met the love of my life, wouldn’t have these other projects I’m excited about, and certainly wouldn’t have found the Cajones or the means to pursue my dream and become a full time writer. If I can get the rest of my situation settled and in order, who knows, maybe that dream grows and helps us all, and I end up being where I wanted to be in the beginning.

Worth a shot I suppose.

Take care,

Don

P.S. In the next week or so, we’ll start accepting submissions for issue 18 that goes to the printer on the 17th, but they need some time to get voted on in order to get in, so if you’ve got material, let’s see it. The voting requirements for posting have been suspended so it’s easier for you, but the voting still helps a lot, so enjoy reading and voting too! And don’t forget, people like feedback. --Dave

Oi Litmock Peeps,

How are all you wonderful readers, writers and voters? Good I hope. Better than world affairs and global economies these days, I also hope! But let’s not get into such deep, gloomy subjects this newsletter, eh? Spring is coming, after the snowiest winter in the States in my lifetime, it is certainly welcome too. Let’s discuss happier topics, more things long term pertinent to Litmocracy and us, its denizens.

Hmm… Where to begin. I guess I’ll start with the biggest news that’s ever affected me, and it involves Litmocracy. I’m getting married it appears, and the person I intend to spend the rest of my life with if it all works out, I met right here at Litmocracy. It’s our very own, very special, very wonderful StarLizard.

Yerp.

Is true. We are engaged. Has been turbulent, whirlwind, storybook, and very, very, very difficult. The fairy tales and story books leave out the pain and suffering and difficult part, or they sure as hell gloss over them, but these things apparently are par for the true love course. Things are up in the air and out of our control in large part. As old Al Einstein said after divining the theory of relativity, “it’s complicated.”

She lives in Canada. I’m a damned Yankee. We have borders and hard travel with many miles between us, homes that have to be cared for when we see each other, work missed and costs involved, pasts and families, Visa’s and many, many complexities to deal with, but we are doing our best.

And I love her so very much it isn’t funny. It’s a love I never believed existed but it does. It’s meeting Santa Clause 35 years after you find out that Christmas isn’t real. After years of helping to build this site, and her helping me quite nicely with a good bit of excess freelance work, helping me meet deadlines and so forth, she came down last August and we almost instantly fell in love. The rest is history. Mad trips and being stranded (thankfully together), dog bites, countless issues I won’t get into. All I know is when we’re together I’m happy and productive and content and when we’re apart I’m a bombed out crater of a human being. Hopefully she can move here and we can build a business to generate more work for Litmock writers.

Anyway, in a way I have all of you to thank for this, particularly the site itself and even the ideals of Litmocracy, and you too Dave. We built this site with the intention of making this world a little bit of a better, freer place. It is somewhat ironic that my happiness rests outside my hands in a number of ways, but certainly meeting StarLizard has made this world a better place because it’s made me a better person. So we succeeded somewhat. If we all keep working maybe we succeed completely. I’ll keep you all posted.

Anyway, onto business. The Barb Terry Book is nearly complete and she will be doing a massive publicity tour this Summer, including appearances on Stern and some late night talk shows. Should do us all well. Here’s the awesome cover:

Oh, and Prometheus has some stuff cooking as usual. Love this young writer’s hustle. That is how you improve. You work at it. Here is a review of his fine new journal, Recovering The Self: http://www.authorsaccess.com/writing/ghostwriting/ernest-dempsey-earn-extra-income-freelance-writing-for-the-web

Arightyo then. Back to the brutality of reality. Hope you all have great days. And thank you.

Pain.

It’s funny. Everybody hates it. Everybody fears it. Yet it’s the muse of the most successful writers of all time. Extreme pain and extreme pleasure have spawned most of the great works of art throughout history, in fact. This is not to be confused with stress. Stress causes writers block. So how do you purge the real pain when it comes? With words, what else? Don’t waste it.

I propose a nice cathartic exercise in singing the blues. Let’s have some nice pain infused storytelling in the fiction section. Or non-fiction. We’ll be looking for the best pieces to spotlight. In fact, speaking of spotlights and whatnot, Dave has fixed it so you can find unread pieces to read and add to your voting ticket. They’ll be right on the front page when you log in. Just read and vote, can’t get any easier.

Me, I’m numb right now. All is wrong and all is right. I fear everything and expect the worst so I fear nothing. Have some nice gigs coming, particularly the Recher on August 16th (of which Litmocracy is a sponsor) and am awaiting results of the New Mexico trip when my manager Eddie Adams meets with a venture capitalist that is interested in funding both Web and MIA. There’s also interest in Web of Destruction from the same people that had Project Greenlight. I get to hear all of the changes they want to make next weekend. Yay. Butcher my baby, just don’t throw out the bathwater, okay?

Meantime I tread water and wait. Wait. To me it’s the worst most disturbing four letter word there is. Wait. Wait. Wait. I’m pretty certain waiting will be the death of me in the end. Waiting and worrying causes stress and prevents me from writing.

Whatever.

I should have a new book in the works shortly for 2 writers. I’m just waiting for the customer’s details. This will be a ghost write of half a book. I’ll edit it. I’ll let you know as I do what the details are and am currently soliciting more work. All the other work is in motion or filled out.

Oh, and for some good news, our very own Nightshade just got a book published. Chris Melton’s novella, Geared for Gold, has just been released through PublishAmerica and is on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Target retail stores, and Books Unlimited. It was also released in Ireland a few days ago.

Congrats Chris. Write on!

Happy Holidays,

Litmocracy sends issues of Literal Translations to the printer on the 17th of March, June, September, and December. That’s coming up! Notification of acceptances will start on the 10th. If the 17th rolls around and you haven’t received anything, do not fret! You submission might stay in the top 25 for the next three months and find its way into the subsequent issue.

The quality of our magazine depends on finding the best stuff, so come out and vote, and encourage your family and friends to help too. Who knows - maybe they’ll offer some great encouragement or helpful criticism.

Oi,

Hope all is well in Litmock land. Time for an update I spose, or Dave wants one anyway. Many things in limbo. Many in motion. But I spose that’s life. You get to spin your wheels to go nowhere, eh?

Well, watcha gonna’ do? I guess I spin some wheels here. The last newsletter I asked for personal stories in relation to Litmock. Someone you met. The first time you won money here for your writing. Something that got published because of edits here. Whatever. So I’m starting a $10 contest for the personalized Litmock story that gets the most votes. Most or all of the stories posted there will be going into the forthcoming book that chronicles Litmocracy’s early years, though I will likely edit them. I know you have stories. I have tons. I have maybe the best story of my life in fact, something I recently discovered ultimately through this site, though I’m not getting into it right now, it’s quite wonderful, and I have many damned fine stories besides that. I’ve physically met and gotten to know or have known lots of people through this site. I’ll share a recent story that relates to this site to give you an idea. I just went to Canada because of someone I know through here.

Why go to the land of square wheels, bitter cold, aboots and french speak you say, when you live in the cradle of joy and freedom right there in the good ol’ US of A?

Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff....

I love french. Is probably the most gorgeous language of all. Is partially why I’m a Kerouac freak, he played with and combined English and French. My best friend told me it was the gourmet food of languages and I tend to agree. Anyway, I went North to visit our very own StarLizard. To pick another beautiful mind. I have encountered many beautiful minds here. That’s why we’ve put so much effort into this site, why we’ve worked at it so long. We want to identify beautiful minds, help open them up, help them learn they can make this hell hole a better place by being inquisitive, learning and working together. And sometimes, because of this site, I learn and gain that very insight myself. I did on this trip.

When I went there we drew and we wrote and kicked around ideas about this site and the book, which all of us are working on whether you know it or not. I met 3 very cool cats and a large Raccoon named Bandit. Saw a black squirrel which was wicked cool because I didn’t know they existed. I found Canada to be a wonderful place. It broke all preconceived notions I had, which, by the way, I should know better than to have, but I did have them. I guess I believed Canada to be a very socialist place compared to the freedom that America offers.

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAMUAHAHAHAHAHBAHHHHHH… Oh… Gawd… Sorry.

So, I find myself wandering around Ottawa of all places, the Capitol of Canada. And I’m looking at all these free spirited relaxed people walking around in this clean city, and I’m learning that Canadian laws and police are far more lax and less militant and intrusive than here, they tend to treat you like adults there. And I look up and see all these beautiful buildings, really gorgeous, but for this one monstrosity surrounded by concrete bunkers that stick out in the street and block traffic, and it’s the US embassy, and I realize why I have these preconceived notions. None of the other embassies are blocked, they’re beautiful and open. The US embassy is obnoxious and military and oppressive looking, a bunker built to guard a freedom that no longer exists, to keep it away from people who ignore it and have no desire to attack or invade because they don’t want it. Now I know why we’re viewed the way we are, and why I had preconceived notions. Because I’ve been fed the pablum that we’re so free here and no one else is for so long, I subconsciously bought into it. Now I want to move to Canada. But I’m trapped in this place by so many things, starting with retarded green paper that I despise and loathe anyway, but many other reasons as well.

Though some day, mark my words, I’ll become a Canadian Citizen! That place rules. Will take some work getting used to the square wheels. Or maybe I just splain to them round ones work better. I do so like to rock the boat.

Anyway. That is my recent story and my insight gained because, in a a roundabout way, of Litmocracy. Now I know a lot of you people and can even tell some of your stories. Mikael Covey, what of your trip to my house on your way to New York. Ernest Dempsey and I are slowly working on a book. Dave has come to my house, seen 99 Burning, I’ve stayed at his. We’ve built this site. Julia Anyway worked on the Alien book. Dean and I drank beer in bars in Baltimore when we were 22 and we met at a gig. We corresponded as writers BEFORE the Internet. I could do this for quite some time but I’m sure you all get the idea. Let’s hear your story.

Until next time,

Hmmm, How about a gourmet good bye,

Au Revoir

Ahoy Crewmembers,

Haloo to one and all. I feel a bit slimy and in need of a shower right now. Hmm.... Maybe I should back up a hair and ‘splain myself. Let’s start here:

Fabianism: 2 [the Fabian Society; from the members’ belief in slow rather than revolutionary change in government] : of, relating to, or being a society of socialists organized in England in 1884 to spread socialist principles gradually (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)

K. Fabianism in a nutshell occurs when those that believe in socialist principles slowly invade a free or capitalist society acting as a freedom loving citizen in an organized, quiet effort to spread Socialist principles. It is often referred to with the frog in the pot metaphor. It’s easier to cook frogs in a pot, to keep them from jumping out, by slowly increasing the heat so that they don’t notice. I have done a good bit of reading on the subject and the best description of it I have found is that of a boa constrictor. Boa’s victims usually die of toxicity from fear before they get crushed, and the boa slowly, slowly constricts its victim. There is a shrew in South America that fakes its death as it is being crushed, waits to be swallowed and chews its way out.

To that avail, as Dave and I both thoroughly believe that America is becoming Amerika under a Fabian system that has slowly evolved since Wilson (the choice of a lesser of two evils is not a choice at all, and allows for the government, the fabians and those in power to consume more of our freedoms, properties and monies), we have actively and vocally informed as many people as we possibly can about the practice of Fabianism.

That has brought us the most presumptuous, leftist government ever that is printing fiat currency to erase debt (????eating yourself thin????) and which is A. going to tax us to hell and B. take more power and Liberty than Great Britain did when it made its own colonies liberate themselves. So we decided to start crawling into the belly of the beast like that shrew. Hence the disgusting feeling and the need for a shower.

Recently we attended a lobbyist arranged government purchasing convention, wherein Federal and State Representatives met contractors who paid to meet them, and who contributed to political campaigns, in an effort to solicit government business. The funny thing is this was an entirely “green” convention, to fit the new administration’s green fetish, and these businesses were large, and unlike past trade shows, each sector was represented by one business that could afford to be there, like Alcoa or Hurst Boilers, the largest Boiler Maker on the planet. The government doesn’t care about getting the best value anymore, there’s not a shopping process. They meet the business that helps them maintain power and then spend tax dollars with these companies. As the undersecretary of the Navy, Howard Snow, told me when I interviewed him at this convention, “We want these businesses to know the Navy is a buyer. These businesses are looking to deal with each other and they see us and say, ‘wait a minute,’ because we’re the Navy. We’re a good customer. We pay our bills on time and help businesses grow.”

He was a nice man who I felt believes in what he’s doing but the principles behind this thought process frighten me. The government was not formed to stimulate business, to take money via taxation to spend in the economy on friendly companies. In fact, it was formed for the opposite reason. Further, he explained how in FY ‘09 the Navy was on a lead silver mandate, all buildings and facilities built had to utilize X amount of silver. He had no idea why, but he was purchasing X amount of silver.

The whole thing smelled of excess. The rooms provided to us were expensive as hell, and when I added Dave after I made the deal to cover this, they offered the room gratis because cash means nothing to these people, even as my children go trillions into debt to pay for such silliness. There will be more belly searching in the future, but our initial findings were much as expected.

In other news, Prometheus has been fired from his job in Peshawar, Pakistan and is being persecuted by the law for trying to tell the truth. I will be writing a book about his story and the overall corruption in that part of the world. it affects us all folks. Hang in there Prometheus.

Litmock Member Dean Drinkel is off to Cannes. Break a leg brother!

And until next time,

May life treat you well!

Howdy folks,

We here in Litmock land hope that all is well. We have a few announcements. First, with the impending release and press of the Barbara Terry book, and the exposure we should glean from some of it, we really want to fix up the site. Make it easier to use. I want ALLLLLLLL suggestions, don’t care how silly they are, so I can start nagging Dave about fixing them. And I’m a damned fine nag.

Trust me on that one.

So whatever you see that’s fixable or changeable, email me at deminizer13@99burning.com where I can secretly reword them with my army of Amish Ninja lawyers so as to assault Dave with a blind siding attack of logic so strong, even he would be forced to simplify VOTING procedures (hint, hint) if that’s what we choose. I don’t care how silly it seems. Want a contest on naming your poodle? We’ll debate it. Might not do it but we will debate it.

(...here’s a hint on the poodle naming thing though, save you some time. Dude, you have a poodle. Name it fifi and get it over with. What? Like Killer or Titan is really gonna’ work? And get a real dog next time, fer criminy’s sake)

Also,

Litmock’s 15th Issue of Literal Translations is headed to the printer in the next few weeks.

Wow, 15, sniff sniff… They grow so fast. For those of us who’ve been around from the beginning, we’re proud, and looking forward to the next 15 and the continued growth and evolution of the site. To that end, we are putting together a book about our progress thus far. Star Lizard is working on a stellar cover and I’m going to name it and write a forward… but since I’m writing it, it’ll naturally be a backward, and so we’ll have that coming too. I’d like stuff from you guys to put in there.

HEY. WAKE UP, I’M TALKING TO YOU. THIS IS A WRITERS SITE. CALL FOR WRITING:

Anything you want in there that is pertinent to the site, send to me. I’ve met Michael Covey for instance. Dave and I have worked with Prometheus. there are tons of things you could write about. Maybe you won money. Whatever, send it directly to me. I’m partial to illegible articles written in fingerpaints, crayon, or goats blood, but hey, an email or a word doc will work.

To each his or her own.

Email those as well at the above address. I might shun them for a bit, but I will get back to you. More on the Barbara Terry stuff next week or so. I have 33 interviews to write between now and the end of next month for that so I’ma get cracking now.

Oh, on the personal front, not bidness related at all, something rather, well, unexpected and wonderful has occurred and I’m in too good of a mood to rant against socialism. I hate them, grrrr… but not doing it today. Too good of a mood is a good thing sometimes I spose. I ain’t saying what it is, but just not in the mood to be too angry right now, so this week, I’m open to any of you to pick up the anti socialist mantle and run with it. I gots way too much stuff to do.

Aloha,
Don

Ahoy Crewmembers,

It’s Augustish already. Wow. Time flies when your having fun. Maybe that’s why it feels like April? Nah… It’s a good day to be a Litmockian. I’m happy to announce the first of our projects has been sold. I am editing and ghosting a book for race car driver Barbara Terry that is tentatively titled Athletes Ride. It is being published by Comfort Publishing (they publish books, a few business magazines and a newspaper), pre-sales begin next week. the book will be sold globally and is getting a full marketing push. The book includes interviews with 40 professional athletes about their car collections, history of vehicles, love of autos etc., along with gorgeous color picture spreads of their current car collections. Athletes interviewed in the book include Sugar Ray Leonard, Bruce Jenner, Marvin Harrison, Michael Strahan, Mike Piazza and on and on and on, and many have agreed to promote the book, do book signings and so forth. We are so very excited! We’ll have pre-sale info in the next few weeks but it will be in print and released in time for Christmas.

On other fronts for those of you writing, here’s an opportunity passed to us from our friend Prometheus Captive:

Dear Writers,

Our next marketing seminar will be Tuesday, Sept. 8th, 7-9 p.m. EST. If interested in attending, please call 1-800-944-8766 and then enter the code 31610 #. There is no other requirement. We will open the floor to discussion like we did last time and I will moderate. This seminar series is very popular, the information discussed valuable, and the feedback positive. The purpose of the seminar is to share ideas about how to market and sell our books in the rapidly changing publishing landscape, and online. World Audience has an extremely talented and experienced group of writers and we continue grow as a business at a very fast rate. Yet, we are only about 50 authors. Therefore, at a certain point, we be able to capitalize on our success for the exclusive benefit of our titles in a major way. I hope you can join us. Thank you.

Cheers Mike

Have a great one… or a great six pack if you can get ‘em!

Ahem… amidst crankiness and coffee beans, shaken, not stirred

Ahoi,

I guess I picked a bad lifetime to quit smoking. Being in a foul mood for the better part of a year now, the newsletters have slowed some, admittedly. What’s the old saying, if you have nothing good to say, shut the hell up.

Mmmmkay.

The last newsletter spawned some good debate, I still fully believe that both our current form of taxation and the system is broken, I have yet to see a compelling argument otherwise, but the fact is we have some good things to say other than woe is me because the government sucks and the Bama is yet another liar so I’ll just get to that, to the good stuff, that is.

First things first, we have a decent development we’ve been working on for awhile, between Dave and myself and some other people. I’ve been editing a book about professional athletes car collections, from Arnold Palmer to Sugar Ray Leonard, written by a female race car driver named Barbara Terry. She’s very talented and has interviewed almost 50 athletes, the total will be 50. We are trying to work out the details of an offer from Comfort Publishing, so we’ll keep you posted, but it will be a big book so yay for Litmocracy.

Our friend Dean M. Drinkel is working on some stuff and had a recent trip to Cannes again. Hope to hear how that went. Our brother in captivity, PrometheusCaptive has found some resolution to his situation in Pakistan. His charges were dismissed and once he is safely out of Pakistan and working elsewhere we’ll have an update on his situation but rest assured, he is okay.

While I was trying to not make my situation or mood worse, Dave pelted me about tax law and now I’m back to being whipped up into a furious frothing white salivating frenzy so here’s what we agree on:

[9:27:37 PM] Dave Scotese says: It would be helpful if they stopped enforcing tax laws, but a far better idea to spread around is this:
[9:28:34 PM] Dave Scotese says: Anyone who enforces a stupid law (in your opinion) should be called out for enforcing a stupid law.
[9:28:56 PM] Dave Scotese says: Public support for undoing whatever enforcement action was created should be whipped up.
[9:29:29 PM] Dave Scotese says: Stupid laws ought not to be enforced. Taxation is one of them. And it ISN’T enforced in most cases.
[9:29:55 PM] Dave Scotese says: So find a better way to spend your money and next time you hear about a rally for a tax evader, sign up to help.

I agree with that but so help me when I get a effing bullhorn and some crowds again… grrrrrrrr....

Oh yeah, and we have a share this feature so you can spread the word or good stories or pieces here at Litmock to other social networking sites:

[8:223:49 PM] Dave Scotese says: I also added a “Share This” widget which makes it easy to share the article on a whole boatload of social networks.
[8:25:09 PM] Dave Scotese says: SocialFeet does the same thing, but specifically for Facebook and also shows you stuff that your friends on Facebook have been doing at sites that have SocialFeet.
[8:25:13 PM] Dave Scotese says: Umm…
[8:25:51 PM] Dave Scotese says: I guess what we want to say in the newsletter is that these are new features that we can use to help spread the word about litmocracy to people we know.

That, even in my mood, is cool. Okay, so back to the coffee and the writing and the editing and 36 more hours of endless work followed by trying to be nice with the kids while sleepless little coffee gnomes sleep walk me through one more endless day.

dear god, when will it ever end…

ciao
