A Pattern

I’ve read this a few times now and I only just noticed that the meter is really cool, except in the last two stanzas where it breaks for me. Lemme see about fixing this line:
Don lost his wife at sixty-three, a lifelong friend
...
Don at sixty-three lost his wife and best friend
...
Am I the only one who feels the improvement in the meter here?

It IS a weird, actual meter. I’ve read this a few times, too. I think it’s one of those things that has its own music.
