Not Everything’s a Buck at the Dollar Tree

Category: Mind Change

Leaving behind the first drops of rain, I stepped inside the Dollar Tree, wearing clothes almost half my weight and carrying a backpack as well as a bag of items from a grocery I had visited minutes ago. Needless to say I was dying to get some relief from the baggage while picking some items worth my precious bucks at the Dollar store.

“Excuse me,” I said to get attention of the girl at the counter in front of me. She gave me a look that spoke, not another one. But it wasn’t stronger than my urge to get rid of my baggage that moment. So I went on anyway, “Could you please tell me where I might put my stuff while I go pick my items in there?”

“You just have to carry it with you,” she said, turning her face away and without doing the favor of throwing some courtesy in. “We don’t want anybody get tripped or something.”

Trying to appreciate the response, I just looked around to see if there still was any hope untouched by the young woman’s mood. The sight of a guy attending with a smile to a customer at the left end of the store told me not all was topsy-turvy here.

“Hi,” I stepped forward to his counter. “Can I put my stuff here while I shop inside?”

“Sure,” the guy responded with a welcoming smile. “You can put it here.” He pointed to his right. And adding to his credit, he asked if I’d need a basket while I go pick my items.

Getting the basket from him, I thanked him and shopped well. Though he was busy doing a customer when I returned with some items and my wallet in my hand, I didn’t spare a second in deciding to wait for him rather than going to the other counter and risk tripping on some bad weather there.

Stepping out of the store, I had no doubt that there were things in these Dollar stores that didn’t really cost a dollar – some not worth a penny and others worth millions. And you can get them for free!
